IAM RoadSmart Official Provider

What We Do

What can I expect during advanced rider training?

Once you have joined the IAM RoadSmart course you will be allocated to a local area group such as SAM and have a copy of the Advanced Rider Course posted out to you.
Once SAM gets your details from the IAM they will allocate you an Observer based on your location and availability for rides.

Your Observer will then arrange a first meeting to assess your riding and from there on, work through the ADVANCED Rider Course with you during a number of observed sessions together. There is no set number of observed sessions and the coaching will be matched to your development pace.

Once your Observer is content, you will be paired up with a different Observer for an assessment. This will ensure you benefit from the viewpoint of 2 different Observers and conduct a “test-like” ride in realistic circumstances.

Following this you will either proceed and take your IAM assessment or be given a few areas to polish up prior to the advanced assessment.

At all times there are several Observers available but the key to success is your practising what you have been discussing in the observed sessions.

Above all it should be fun!

The whole culture of SAM is very much about making friends, motorcycling fulfilment, and continuous rider development. Our extensive events list reflects this. Under a unique grading system we offer rides to suit all abilities, covering a wide variety of routes and distances. Many of our members take this a stage further, regularly competing in endurance events such as the Welsh and Scottish Rallies, or fulfilling personal ambitions like John O’Groats to Lands End. For a number of years now SAM has run its own very successful navigational rally – the South West Peninsula Spring Rally – which is open to all.

Should you choose to join us, you will receive our excellent quarterly magazine, ‘Full Chat.’ Through this you will learn of opportunities enabling you to experience aspects of motorcycling otherwise not encountered outside the club, at very reasonable rates.  We also participate in other events such as skills development held at Thruxton race circuit.
